Protecting the health of the soil is central to how we care for your land. Severson Ag takes a thoughtful, accountable approach to every acre, making decisions based on the needs of each field, the conditions of the season, and the long-term health of the land.
Strip-Till
Strip-till is our standard approach, with adjustments based on the crop and field conditions. Rather than disturbing the entire field, we till a narrow strip where the crop will be planted while leaving the soil between rows largely undisturbed and protected by crop residue. Fertilizer is placed below the soil surface, near the crop roots and with less exposure to runoff.
These practices help protect the soil between rows while placing nutrients where crops can access them. Research from the University of Illinois found that deep fertilizer placement in strip-till reduced phosphorus runoff compared with broadcast fertilizer application, without reducing crop yield (University of Illinois study). For landowners, that means a practical approach to farming that helps protect the soil and support its productivity over the long term.
Cover Crops
One example is our use of cover crops. Cover crops are planted between main crops to help reduce erosion, capture nutrients that might otherwise be lost, improve soil structure, and help rainfall soak into the soil. They also support biodiversity by adding plant diversity and providing food and habitat for soil organisms and beneficial insects.
We strive to use cover crops on as many acres as we can. In 2027, we expect coverage to exceed 90% of our total farm acreage, with decisions based on what makes sense for each field and what the weather allows. Cover crops are one way we can help protect the soil today while supporting the long-term health and productivity of the land.
